Sound policy-making for future foods- Parliamentary event

We were delighted to support the All-Party Parliamentary and Scientific Committee meeting on Monday 17th November at Portcullis House on “Sound policy-making for future foods”. The meeting was chairedbySam Carling MP and attended by Viscount Stansgate and other members of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee.

The meeting heard three fascinating talks on the opportunities and challenges around future foods for the UK, and the value of collaboration across the different parts of the UK ecosystem. Dr Julian Braybrook, UK Government Chemist & Director, National Laboratories at LGC, spoke about the role of the UK Government Chemist in the food system, Dr Sonja Billerbeck, Department of Bioengineering, Faculty of Engineering, Imperial College London, talked about the analytical challenges and directions for future foods from a microbial biotechnology perspective, and Dr Rick Mumford, Deputy Chief Scientific Advisor and Deputy Director of Science and Research, UK Food Standards Agency, spoke about the role of scientific evidence for future food policy-making.

The Q&A session was started by Sam Carling MP, asking what the Government could do to assist and ensure the UK capitalises on the capabilities and opportunities in this area for public benefit. The discussions extended in to the drinks reception in 1 Parliament Street and continued over a delicious dinner.

The event was an excellent opportunity to discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with future foods with Parliamentarians, scientific bodies, science-based industry and academia.
