The National Measurement Laboratory appoints Academic in Residence at the University of Leeds

The National Measurement Laboratory (NML) at LGC is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Nicolas Orsi as its new Academic in Residence, based at the NML’s Northern Cell Metrology Hub at the University of Leeds.

Dr Nicolas Orsi is Associate Professor in Histopathology and Industrial Innovation at St James’s University Hospital and serves as Director of Post-Graduate studies at the Leeds Institute of Medical Research. He leads a large research team focusing on women’s health and computer-aided histopathology diagnostics, fostering strong collaborations with industry and international academic institutions.

Nic began his academic career with a BSc in Animal Science at the University of Reading in 1998. He went on to complete a PhD in Biology at the University of York - where he investigated cellular stressors in mammalian preimplantation embryos. In 2002, he joined the University of Leeds as a postdoctoral researcher and, by 2005, had become a Principal Investigator in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. During this time, he became involved in several academic spin-out companies and commercialisation ventures, bridging the gap between research and application.

Expanding his research interests to encompass gynaecological malignancies, Nic undertook an MBChB (Medicine) whilst remaining research-active. Following the completion of his studies in 2012, he became an Academic Foundation doctor at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, focusing on integrating fundamental science, medicine and commercialisation. He joined the Histopathology training programme as an Academic Clinical Fellow in 2014, progressing to Clinical Lecturer and subsequently Industrial Clinician Scientist in 2019. Nic held a Visiting Fellowship at Harvard Medical School until 2019.

In addition to his academic and clinical roles, Nic contributes to the wider research community as Trustee for Action on Womb Cancer charity and as Vice Chair of Leeds (East) Research Ethics Committee for the Human Research Authority. Outside of work, he enjoys life in the countryside near Leeds, where he pursues his passions for aviculture and beekeeping.

“I am delighted to be partnering with the NML to bring metrology’s precision and insight into clinical and scientific research. From improving reproducibility and accelerating biomarker discovery to powering the use of AI in digital pathology, metrology has the potential to transform cell-based therapies, disease modelling and diagnostics. By building partnerships across academia, industry, and start-ups in the North of England, we can create a thriving ecosystem that translates cutting-edge measurement science into real-world impact.”- Dr Nicolas Orsi

We welcome Nic’s appointment and are excited to be supporting his efforts in promoting the visibility of analytical sciences, particularly cell metrology, in translational research for clinical applications. His appointment marks an exciting step forward to advancing health innovation and impact across the UK.
