Our Science Strategy
As we continue to push the boundaries of measurement research, our strategy is focused on maintaining and developing capabilities across our core, developing and emerging metrology areas, providing the confidence that public health, product safety and innovation rely on now and for the future.
Informed by recommendation from the International Science Review 2023 and by input from a wide range of stakeholders, our strategy uses Measurement Readiness Levels (MRLs) to track the maturity of techniques across science areas, enabling consistent benchmarking and progress monitoring. This approach supports strategic planning by identifying our driver, outputs and optimal partnerships for translation and impact. Mapping capabilities across themes provides a holistic view of the pipeline, helping to balance established and emerging areas and guide funding requirements.
Delivering on Government missions
Kickstarting economic growth
The government aims to grow the UK economy by supporting innovation to start, grow, scale and invest within the UK. To support the translation of innovation into market-ready products, commercialisation must be de-risked. Metrology (measurement science) and standards play a vital role in ensuring materials, products, and processes are reliable, reproducible, fit-for-purpose and safe. We work directly with innovators to solve their toughest measurement challenges.
An NHS fit for the future
Transforming the NHS is a key government priority, and measurement science is critical to enabling the novel technologies needed to achieve this.
Genomics, highlighted in the NHS 10-Year Health Plan as a transformative tool, is one area where we are advancing measurement science—working with European partners to support early cancer detection and precision medicine through reliable genomic profiling. Our work ensures emerging technologies are underpinned by accurate, traceable measurements for successful NHS implementation.
Through the Healthcare Scientists Knowledge Transfer Partnership Programme, we collaborate directly with healthcare agencies to address specific measurement challenges, helping to develop and integrate innovative, high-value solutions that enhance patient care.
